The plum is the fruit of the plum tree of which there are two species that are used for fruit production: “Prunus Domestica” or European plum and “Prunus salicina” or Japanese plum.
There are plums that belong to other species like “Prunus insititia” (mirabella plum), “Prunus Espinosa” (Endrino), “Prunus cerasifera” (mirabolano)… but these are not commercially viable because they are too small or because their taste is too acidic. Sometimes these species are used as graft supports for” ”Prunus domestica” o “Prunus salicina”.
Nobody knows the origin of the plum for sure. The European plum seems to have sprung up in the Caucaussian region and the area around the Caspian Sea, while the Japanese plum is believed to have come from China.
In classical Greece plums were considered to be wild. In Rome they began to be seen in a different light and there were several varieties. In the last few decades plums have benefited from advances in technology and many new kinds have been developed.
